Wedding Unity Ceremony Ideas

One of the things I love best about a wedding day is seeing the creative way couples incorporate a personal unity ceremony.  I think it is special to have those symbolic, tangible moments that represent your commitment to each other. This is a chance to personalize your wedding and also create a memorable moment for the rest of your lives.  There are a lot of great traditional wedding unity ceremony options for those couples looking to keep things more classic. A few examples are lighting a candle, pouring sand into a container, or tying a knot with a string.  All of them have beautiful and sentimental elements that can be included in a ceremony. Below is a list of a few of my favorite unique wedding unity ceremony ideas.

Fun and unique unity ceremony ideas

Plant a tree

The first wedding I ever photographed was Suzanne and Peter’s wedding at Dixon’s Apple Orchard in Cadott, Wisconsin.  They each brought soil from their parents’ homes and used that dirt to plant a tree that was later planted in their yard.  I particularly love this idea because the tree will forever be a reminder of their day and their commitment to each other.  It’s also a beautiful sentiment of two families joining together and is also fun to watch the tree grow throughout the years. I’ve had several other couples do this and it is always such a sweet unity ceremony!

Build a bouquet

At Tiffany and Dan’s wedding, they wanted to include their families in the unity ceremony. They had each of their invited family members contribute a rose to build a beautiful bouquet.  Altogether, it was so special seeing their closest loved ones all come up to the front to contribute to their big moment.  Plus the bouquet will be dried and kept for a cherished keepsake from their ceremony. One of the most unique wedding unity ceremony ideas I’ve ever seen!

Painting a canvas

Ok, I haven’t witnessed this one in person but I think the idea is so neat! I’ve seen examples where couples have different colors of paint in small containers and together pour them over a canvas to create a piece of art that can be hung in their home to forever showcase their commitment to each other.  Please one of my couples do this!

Create a cocktail or pour a drink!

For those couples looking for a fun, modern take on a wedding ceremony – I’m all about creating a cocktail together during your unity ceremony.  Or even just pouring a beer or a bottle of wine into two glasses and having your first cheers together as husband and wife is an adorable idea for a wedding unity ceremony.

Create your own wedding unity ceremony idea!

When my husband and I got married, I wanted to do something we had never seen anyone else do for our unity ceremony. Additionally, I love custom made signs. So, we made that into our unity ceremony! Each of us hung an end of the sign on the arch where we were married.  Now it is at the end of our driveway, greeting us as we come home every day. Shout out to the Minnesota company https://www.uptownwoodworks.com/ who made our personalized sign for us. We loved this unique wedding ceremony idea!
